The Solution

In order to prevent the unwanted deaths of beloved pets and needed working dogs the use of 1080 poison should be completely eliminated from public and commercial use, and the Australian government has the power to make this so. The Save My Mate Foundation recognizes the uses of 1080 as a pest control and for native wildlife conservation since many native Australian animals are tolerant to the poison (Mcilroy 1982) but it has no place in suburban or farmland areas where pets have access to the baits.

There are alternatives to 1080 for pest control; humane, long term population control techniques exist, such as immunocontraception. In one study, a fertility suppressant established an 89% reduction in fertility of a female goat population in Europe. This method has also shown promising results in companion dogs. If you know that 1080 is being used in your local area, its best to walk your dog in a different location.

Placing exclusion fencing at appropriate points may also help to control population spread.
